Saniel’s Acknowledgment of Ted
Ted Strauss is a wizard. He is an obvious genius in many ways. That’s why it’s probably good for you to know, out front, that he is one of those very wise wizards who has found good reason to temper his wizardliness. He does so with not only an extraordinary human touch, but, even better, an uncommon and fully chosen human touchability.
I was first introduced to Ted by Hillary Davis, who has since become his wife. This was back in February, 1996. At the time I was holding what I called "Open Sittings" in my apartment, in a very small room. Having done years of meditative work to ascend into ultimate mystical states of cosmic and divine awareness, during our early meetings Ted frequently would question why a central feature of our process, feeling, was even necessary. We would talk about it for some time. He would question me vigorously—sometimes to the discomfort of others in the room, and even to my great annoyance—but by the end of the conversation, it wasn’t uncommon for him to be lying on the floor in front of me, weeping.
My sense of it was that, upon encountering the possibility, Ted literally crash-landed in his infinite consciousness and finite body all at once. His seriousness, intensity, and resolve always impressed me, and his willingness to fall into the tight squeezes of his own human personhood never failed to move me.
Within a year Ted had awakened, and he soon shone forth as a passionate, realized advocate of our path of mutual Waking Down. He is willing to talk to anyone about this work, and he does so with ardor, precision, and unquenchable integrity. I have seen him write responses to people’s e-mail questions that made me marvel at his wisdom. I can’t tell you how proud I am of Ted, and how grateful I am to have him as my friend and colleague.
Ted runs the education division of Ma-Tam Temple of Being. "The Waking Down Weekend" was Ted’s idea, and when he presented it to me, I immediately asked him to develop it and make it happen. So, if you have the wonderful opportunity to take that workshop and find out what a godsend it is for so many people, you can thank Ted! He tends to the innards of our computers and other electronic devices and is a marvelous computer artist. He and Linda Groves, along with our friend Al Porter, produce and/or oversee the visual esthetics of all our presentations. He does all this in addition to his own adept work. On the side he runs "Living Dreams," a business dedicated to the promulgation of his amazing inventions. (Ted invented the neck cooler you see advertised in Sharper Image stores and catalogs. He’s got dozens of others in his files and his brain. He really is a wizard!) And he lives all of this in the context of his, to him, supremely important marriage to Hillary.
Few people can hold someone in the places of their wounding as tenderly and tenaciously as Ted. Few have as grand a vision for the healing and transformation of all these tender human hearts and bodies as his. Few indeed anywhere on Earth are as utterly committed to the awakening and miraculous Self-expression in mutuality of every body who can possibly do so. And few, to date, have even met him and had the benefit of his simple, loving company, from which, again and again, all kinds of people come away inspired beyond gratitude and praise. I hope you will make it a point to meet him, for your own sake.
